Our calorie (RER/MER) calculations are based on the Kleiber metabolic scaling formula (RER = 70 × BW0.75) as endorsed by AAFCO and widely used by veterinary nutritionists. Activity level multipliers (MER factors) are drawn from published veterinary nutrition references.
However, individual metabolic rates can vary by ±25% from the formula average even in healthy animals. Actual food intake should always be calibrated based on regular body condition scoring (BCS) performed by your veterinarian.
